Teaching

The DfES have produced professional guidance on occupational health for teachers, in conjunction with the Faculty of Occupational Medicine.  Entitled “Fitness to Teach: Occupational Health Guidance for the Training and Employment of Teachers” (The full guidance is available on line as well as from the Stationery Office).  It contains specific advice on the effect of sensory impairment on a career in teaching.  This emphasises that although teachers must be able to communicate effectively, and be able to respond immediately to the needs of their pupils, without putting at risk the health, safety and welfare of the children, many impairments can be overcome by reasonable adjustments.

The relevant legislation is “The Education (Health Standards) (England) Regulations 1999” and can be found by clicking on the pdf document at the end of this page.
