Managing Low Vision
Using examples of patients who attend a Low Vision Clinic, the effects of different eye conditions on visual performance will be explained, and the different strategies for assisting those patients described. The use of tints, lighting, prisms, electronic aids and optical aids, and training, will all be considered, with particular emphasis on some of the more recent developments.

- To understand how to advise on the use of, and to dispense, optical low vision aids such as hand, stand and spectacle-mounted magnifiers and telescopes (including bioptics).
- To understand how to advise visually impaired patients about their impairment, disability or handicap.
- To understand the application of electronic vision enhancement systems (such as CCTV or television readers) and the way these aids can be obtained.
- To understand the importance of, and methods for, control of illumination in aiding the low vision patient.
- To understand the help which can be given, and the responsibilities of, non-optometric agencies (eg. rehabilitation officers, specialist teachers). To know about registration and its benefits and other procedures to refer to Social Services; statements of special educational need; “Access to Work” scheme; disabled students allowance.
