Sunday trading

The Sunday Trading Act 1994 restricts the opening hours of larger stores on Sundays. The Christmas Day (Trading) Act 2004 regulates trading on Christmas day. Both of these acts apply to England and Wales. For information on Sunday trading please visit the DTI website.

In Northern Ireland the Shops (Sunday Trading &c) (Northern Ireland) Order 1997 brought the law into line with the law in England and Wales. The Order can be viewed on the Northern Ireland Executive’s website.

In Scotland the main effect of the Sunday Working (Scotland) Act 2003 is to give Scottish workers the right to refuse Sunday shifts. It can be viewed on the OPSI website.
