The AOP in conjunction with FODO, ABDO and the British Medical Association (BMA) have released a document aimed at guiding members through the transition to the new GOS Contract in England. Click here to read it.
The contract replaces the current General Ophthalmic Services Terms of Service and will be effective from 1 August 2008. This document provides guidance on the requirements of the contract, a timetable for implementation and advice for practitioners and businesses on the transition between the two.
The document is available to view as a pdf on the AOP website from 15 April 2008 here. There will also be a special edition of Blink, the AOP newsletter, on the subject. Available on 18 April 2008 on the Blink Archive section of the website, it will contain advice and comment from those involved in negotiations over the contract. It will be sent to all members of the AOP.
The UK Vision Strategy, a new document calling for action to prevent avoidable sight loss, was launched on 18th April 2008. The AOP has been heavily involved in the development of it with Chief Executive, Bob Hughes, a key member of the UK Vision Strategy Strategic Advisory Group.
Bob also made a speech at the launch event for the strategy. He praised the way in which all the eye health groups involved managed to put past disagreements behind them to formulate the strategy. He also urged all involved to continue to work together to make the strategy a reality stating:
"This is an exciting start, but it is just a start. – Just think how exciting it will be when this strategy is a reality when the services are in place and preventable blindness is a thing of the past."
"It is just the start of the real work. It is a massive job and it needs all of us to be involved."
